Selbrae House
Selbrae House is a family-owned Scottish brand based in Fife, specialising in finely crafted slate and oak homewares that balance natural materials with restrained, contemporary design. Each piece reflects the character of traditional Scottish craftsmanship while remaining practical for modern entertaining.
Best known for their distinctive Scottish slate serving boards and engraved oak paddles, Selbrae House creates kitchenware and giftware that feels substantial without being overstated. The cool texture of slate and the warmth of sustainably sourced oak combine to produce pieces that are tactile, durable and quietly elegant.
Scottish Slate Serving Boards
Selbrae House has become particularly recognised for its use of locally sourced Scottish slate. Naturally textured and rich in tone, slate provides an ideal surface for serving cheese, charcuterie and appetisers. It keeps food cool, offers visual contrast, and brings an understated architectural quality to the table.
Each slate board is cut and finished to highlight the stone’s natural edge, ensuring subtle variations from piece to piece. The result is servingware that feels considered rather than manufactured — well suited to both everyday entertaining and more formal occasions.
For Australian homes, these boards lend themselves beautifully to grazing tables, outdoor entertaining and relaxed dinner parties, where presentation matters but should never feel forced.
Engraved Oak Boards and Kitchen Accessories
Alongside slate, Selbrae House works extensively with sustainably managed oak. The timber is selected for its strength, grain and warmth, then crafted into serving paddles, chopping boards and kitchen accessories designed for regular use.
The engraved oak collection adds a thoughtful detail without becoming decorative. Motifs are clean and restrained, allowing the natural beauty of the wood to remain central. These pieces work as practical kitchen tools, but also make considered gifts — particularly for housewarmings, milestone birthdays and those who enjoy entertaining.
The combination of slate and oak across the collection creates a cohesive aesthetic: grounded, natural and quietly confident.
Designed for Entertaining
Selbrae House sits comfortably within homes that value quality materials and timeless design. Whether used for serving cheese and wine, presenting desserts, or styling a kitchen bench, the collection brings a sense of permanence and authenticity.
These are pieces that improve with use. Oak develops character over time, and slate acquires subtle patina, reinforcing the idea that good design should endure rather than chase trend.
In a market crowded with lightweight alternatives, Selbrae House offers substance — in both material and intent.
A Scottish Perspective
Founded and produced in Scotland, Selbrae House remains rooted in its landscape. The use of local slate and traditional woodworking techniques reflects a respect for material integrity and regional heritage. At the same time, the clean lines and uncluttered forms ensure the collection feels relevant within contemporary interiors.
Carefully selected for Finch & Lane, Selbrae House complements our broader range of UK and European homewares, offering a distinctive Scottish counterpoint within the collection.
Slate: General Information & Care
Cleaning
Clean your slate product after each use using a water-based spray cleaner and a soft, lint-free cloth. This will help remove any residue or spills and keep the slate looking its best.
Knife Use
Be mindful when using sharp knives on the slate surface as it may create marks or scratches, and probably isn’t good for your knives. If you notice any marks, gently rub the affected area with a soft, lint-free cloth and a small amount of food-safe oil. This will help reduce the appearance of the marks.
Engraved Designs
If your slate product features an engraved design, avoid applying oil to the engraved section, as this may cause the design to darken. If oil comes into contact with the engraved design, create a paste using baking soda and water. Apply the paste to the design, allow it to sit for 15 minutes to draw out the oil, and then wash it off thoroughly to restore the original appearance. Remember to dry the board thoroughly afterwards.
Staining
If staining occurs, such as from leaving food, particularly cheese, on the board for an extended period, you can use a paste made from bicarbonate of soda and water. Apply the paste to the stained area, leave it for 15 minutes, and then wash it off thoroughly to restore the original appearance.
Remember to dry the board thoroughly afterwards.
Dishwasher
Slate is not dishwasher safe.
Avoid
- Do not immerse the slate product in water. If the foam backing does become wet, allow it to dry completely with the foam side facing up.
- Avoid using acidic substances (such as lemon juice) on slate surfaces. Acidic substances can react with the minerals in the slate, causing a chemical reaction that results in a visible stain on the surface.
Oak: General Information & Care
Cleaning
After each use, clean your oak product using a soft, lint-free cloth and a water-based spray cleaner. Gently wipe the surface to remove any residue or spills and keep the oak looking its best.
Storing
Ideally, store oak boards, especially larger ones, on a flat surface instead of on edge. This will help prevent warping and maintain the shape of the board over time.
Wax Oil
If your oak board shows signs of wear or dryness, it can be revived by applying a wax-oil.
Stains
Avoid leaving items, especially cheese, on the board for extended periods, as this can cause stains to develop. Promptly clean any spills or food residues to prevent staining.
If stains do develop, a gentle abrasive scourer or fine sandpaper can help lift most stains. Once the area is fully cleaned and dried, reapply wax oil to seal and protect the wood.
Immersion
Please do not leave your oak product immersed in water; it can lead to warping or damage to the wood. Instead, wipe off any excess water after use and allow the product to dry naturally.
Dishwasher
Oak is not dishwasher safe; the high temperatures, harsh detergents and prolonged exposure to water can cause irreversible damage.
Shipping
International orders are sent DAP (Delivered at Place). Local taxes, duties, and import fees may apply and are payable by the receiver.
