About Rathbornes

ORIGINS
John G Rathborne established his candle company on Wynetavern Street, Dublin in 1488 after moving over from Chester, England to seek his fortune with an innovative new business. All of life’s rituals were done by the soft glow of candlelight, and Rathborne’s candles quickly became woven into the social fabric of the city. From the 1630s Rathbornes supplied Dublin with candlelight for its streets and lighthouses, creating a safer city for its residents and visiting merchants. Candles provided hope and safety from the storms which threatened sailors on the Dublin coastline.

INNOVATION AND TRADITION
We have been refining our candles throughout our history, and taking the best from centuries of experience. This included developing new formulations of wax, moving from animal tallow to develop a special blend of beeswax and stearin during the industrial revolution. This technical innovation gave a cleaner, slower-burning candle for everyone to enjoy, and we remained loyal to our traditional methods of craftsmanship, still hand-pouring our candles today.

Today we no longer need candles to light our streets, but we choose them for our homes. The soft, wavering glow of candlelight provides the same comfort and romance as it has for centuries. Rathbornes 1488 is the world’s oldest candle company, and its iconic candles are intrinsically woven into the social fabric of Ireland.

Celebrating over five centuries of hand-crafting candles, Rathbornes 1488 launched a range of candles for the home, ‘Beyond the Pale’ in 2015. The hand-poured wax candles are infused with the highest quality natural essential oils, tested to ensure optimum scent distribution and the highest quality burn time.

Beyond the Pale

The ‘Beyond the Pale’ collection is comprised of 8 uniquely formulated scents that encapsulate the romance of the Irish landscape with a luxurious modern edge. New to the ‘Beyond the Pale’ collection from September 2018 are two scents, Dublin Dusk and Cassis Leaves and Jasmine.

Dublin Dusk is uniquely poured with black wax and has rich ozonic accords from the Irish coast with a crisp freshness of aromatic woods of smoked oud and aged cedar. Whilst the dark spicy tones of ginger, pepper and anise reveal a base of sweet notes of patchouli and soft musk. Cassis Leaves and Jasmine is a rich, fruity, floral, vibrant and intense scent with top notes of fruity Irish cassis leaves with a twist of rich jasmine, warmed with a hint of spicy clove on a base of sun-dried green moss and wild heather.

With six other fragrances in the collection and three sets of luxurious wash and lotion gift sets, the hand-crafted fragrance collection is available in three candle sizes; a single wick travel candle, two wick classic candle, luxury four wick candle and a 200ml reed diffuser.

Pick Up

We also offer customers the option to pick up the item from our store in Ashburton (VIC, 3174) - this option can be selected during the checkout phase. You will be asked to produce ID and/or a copy of the receipt when you come to collect the goods.
